That was just the first part in a Red Cushing trilogy. The third part - about the death of Yakov Stalin - is up. The second part, about his recruitment as a German, agent will follow.

My favourite line about the Spanish Civil War - albeit one without an adequate critique of Stalinism- comes from a John Cooper Clarke poem about a terrible holiday in Spain. It goes 'I wish I'd joined the International Brigade/ cos the fascists won, and by christ I paid/ In Majorca'.
